The illustrations were made by Hokusai Katsushik (1760-1849). He is one of the greatest and most prolific Japanese painters and creators of colorful ukiyo-e woodcuts. He became famous as an extremely prolific artist, great draftsman, landscape painter, and illustrator. In his paintings he recreated the then Japan. He painted, among others flowers, turtles, pheasants, roosters, bridges and cascades. The attached illustration shows a storm at the foot of Mount Fuji.
This illustration was produced as one of the series "Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji" which was published from c. 1830 to 1832 in the late Edo period. The picture is considered one of the masterpieces of the series.
