This original illustration from the "Plants" series was commissioned by the Dictionary of Universal Natural History by the French botanist and geologist Charles Henry Dessalines d'Orbigny, who lived from 1806-1876.
The attached graphic shows the Canna speciosa, (Roscoe) Hook. is a species of the Canna genus, belonging to the family Cannaceae, a native of the tropical Americas. Introduced to England from South America in 1820, speciosa meaning 'showy'. (Johnson's Gardeners Dictionary, 1856).
