This original illustration from the "Plants" series was commissioned by the Dictionary of Universal Natural History by the French botanist and geologist Charles Henry Dessalines d'Orbigny, who lived from 1806-1876. The attached graphic shows aRosa Centifilia). This species was bred by gardeners as a hybrid of several species of roses. It appeared in France at the end of the 16th century. The following species took part in its creation:Rosa gallica,Rosa moschata,Rosa canina,Rosa damascena. It occurs exclusively in cultivation. It belongs to a group of cultivated varieties with fragrant pink or red flowers. It is called centipede because of the multitude of petals. They are usually compact full-flowered shrubs. Under the weight of these full of flowers, the shoots of these roses bend and hang, and sometimes even break. The typical form has bright pink flowers, cultivars have flowers of various shades of pink color.
