Poster with a reproduction of the chemex patent by Peter Schlumbohm.
Chemex (Chemex coffeemaker) , in which hot water at an appropriate temperature in a glass vessel slowly seeps through a paper filter filled with ground coffee beans. The device was invented in 1941 by Peter Schlumbohm, and is still manufactured today by the Chemex Corporation based in the American city of Chicopee.
In 1958, employees of the Illinois Institute of Technology recognized Chemex as "one of the best-designed products in modern times," and shortly thereafter one copy was included in the collection of applied art at the Museum of Modern Art in New York..
Patent No. USD138561S was issued in 1944 by the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
