Poster with a reproduction of the patent for the Colt revolver from 1839.
The first prototype of a percussion revolver using a multi-round rotary drum was constructed by Colt in 1830 and patented it six years later in the United States. This design was a revolution on the firearms market because until now all guns had to be reloaded after each shot. The new invention of Colt had a five-shot drum, which significantly accelerated the possibility of firing more shots. However, this revolver was not without its drawbacks. In the original version, the weapon had to be partially disassembled in order to recharge it.
patent relates to improvements applied by the Colt in the process of loading the weapon so that reloading the revolver does not require its partial disassembly. This was achieved through the use of a transfer lever and a closing window. Over time, the Colt began equipping the US Navy with weapons, as well as delivering them to all of Europe and Asia. Until recently, Colt's Manufakturing Compnany was one of the largest firearms companies in the world, but in 2015 the Connecticut-based company filed for bankruptcy.
Patent No. US1304 A was published in 1839 by the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
