The painting was made by Henry Lyman Saÿen (1875 - 1918). Sayen was an American artist and engineer, a pioneer in the design of X-ray tubes. He obtained several patents for his scientific inventions, such as a new type of X-ray tube. As a painter, he introduced modern art to the conservative cultural scene of Philadelphia in the United States with his abstract painting style. His works are characterised by very vivid colours.
The accompanying print shows 'Daughter in the Rocker' painted between 1917 and 1918. The original is in the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
