French defense is a popular semi-open debut, marked with ECO codes from C00 to C19. Its basic idea is to secure the weak field f7 and prepare the move d7-d5, while ensuring the development of the royal wing. White is practically unable to effectively prevent this plan, so their strategy is to take advantage of the difficulty of developing Black's queen bishop ("French bishop") and tighten Black's position with the e4-e5 move and develop active actions on the royal wing (including the classic bishop sacrifice) Black for his part has a light counter c7-c5 and with e4-e5 white also f7-f6, and their chances are better on the queen's wing.
