This original illustration from the "Animals" series was made by François Levaillant, who was a French writer, explorer, naturalist, zoological collector and well-known ornithologist. He described many new species of birds based on birds he collected in Africa, and several birds were named after him.
The attached graphic is a Great Toucan - a species of large bird in the toucan family (Ramphastidae), its largest representative. It inhabits South America.
