Already in ancient Rome, there was a clear division into men's and women's hairdressing. A skilled male barber was called tonsor and was a thriving craft. The women were cared for by kypassis and ornatrix, Roman slaves who cut, dyed and arranged their hair in braids and curls fashionable at that time. Beautiful, well-groomed hair was a symbol of wealth and belonging to the upper class. However, hairdressers' tools were quite primitive (wooden curlers or primitive razors) and thus often hairdressing procedures were doomed to failure.

This patent relates to a chair commonly used by hairdressers. It is intended to provide an improved hydraulic mechanism for raising and lowering the seat and also to provide solutions to help keep the seat in its upper position when it is raised by the hydraulic mechanism. In addition, it presents proven solutions that allow you to control the rotation of the chair.

Patent No. US598877 A was published in 1898 by the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
