The illustrations were made by Chōbunsai Eishi (1756–1829), a Japanese woodcutter and painter. Born as the first son of a direct vassal of the Shogunate, a wealthy samurai family that was part of the Fujiwara clan. His early works are prints, mostly Bijing portraits of tall, thin, graceful women in their own style. He was a prolific painter and in 1801 he gave up graphic arts to devote himself to painting. The attached artwork shows the "Sotoori Hime" portrait of the Japanese princess Sotoori catching a spider with her fan.
