This original illustration from the "Animals" series was commissioned by the Dictionary of Universal Natural History by the French botanist and geologist Charles Henry Dessalines d'Orbigny, who lived from 1806-1876. The attached graphic shows the Pterodactyl (Pterodactylus), a genus of small pterosaur living in the Late Jurassic period in modern Europe. The pterodactyl was the first flying reptile to be discovered. Its wings were made of a skin membrane stretched between the elongated fourth finger of the forelimb, with a span of at least 1.06 meters.
