The main weapon of nineteenth-century chess players, when it was widely considered one of the strongest answers to 1. ... e5. It is now considered a debut very much for white risky. White offers a pawn to exert pressure on the center, and in some variants they use the half-open line "f" to organize an attack on field f7 (which is the weakest point in Black's camp).
