This original illustration from the "Plants" series was commissioned by the Dictionary of Universal Natural History by the French botanist and geologist Charles Henry Dessalines d'Orbigny, who lived from 1806-1876. The attached graphic shows the RoyalStrelitzia reginae). It is a species of large, ornamental plant from the Strelice family, with an original, dorsal structure and contrasting colors of flowers: orange and blue, reminiscent of the colors of birds of paradise, hence its English name -Bird of Paradise. It comes from South Africa, where it grows on the banks of rivers and in coastal areas. Strelitzia received its botanical name in honor of Charlotte Mecklenburg-Strelitz, wife of King George III of Great Britain.
