Poster with a reproduction of the patent for scissors from 1930. Already in ancient Rome, there was a clear distinction between men's and women's hairdressing. A skilled male barber was called tonsor and was a successful craftsman. The women were cared for by kypassis and ornatrix, Roman slaves who cut, dyed and arranged their hair in braids and curls fashionable at that time. Beautiful, well-groomed hair was a symbol of wealth and belonging to the upper class. However, hairdressers' tools were quite primitive (wooden curlers or primitive razors) and thus often these hairdressing procedures were doomed to failure. patent relates to hairdressing scissors, the blades of which are movably (pivotally) connected with the shafts. The blade is curved in an arc of a circle so that the hair is cut directly, thus preventing unevenness when trimming it. Patent No. US1783853 A was published in 1930 by the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
