King Gillette's razor patent reproduction poster. Gillette was the son of a patent clerk and heard many times stories of new inventions that changed the world. He himself dreamed of constructing a simple item that would be cheap to produce. In the late 1800s, Gillette asked Massachusetts Institute of Technology engineers to help him develop the technology for disposable razor blades. However, he was informed that the mass production of thin, hard and cheap blades was not possible. Gillette did not give up and together with engineer William Nickerson, he founded the American Safety Razor Company where he built his own machine for the production of razor blades. The main object of the patent is to provide a razor in which the need to sharpen the blade is obviated. For this purpose, the razor blade is made of a very thin steel sheet, which is flexible in itself due to its thinness, but after connecting to the handle it receives a degree of rigidity sufficient to make it completely operational. Another object of the invention is to provide a handle adapted to receive a blade with two cutting edges so that the life of the blade can be doubled, and to provide a simple system for adjusting the cutting edge to accommodate "light or heavy beard stubble." and easy to clean Patent No. US775134 A was issued in 1904 by the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
