The illustrations were made by Shinsui Itō (1753 - 1806), a Japanese painter. He came from a poor region of Tokyo. In 1908, after finishing three years of elementary school, he started working in a factory of signaling boards. His talent was discovered by Shōzaburō Watanabe. Itō's work has been recognized and received numerous awards. For many years he worked as an illustrator, he also made pictures in the style ofbijinga. He is considered the last great creator of theukiyo-e woodcut. The attached graphic from 1915 shows "Yokugo no onna" in translation means "Woman after bath".
