The illustrations were made by Kuniyoshi Utagawa (1798 - 1861) - a Japanese painter, considered one of the last great ukiyo-e artists. His real name was Magosaburō Igusa, he was educated by Kunisada Utagawa. He dealt with woodcutting and book illustration. He painted landscapes, animals, theater scenes, he became famous for his pictures of soldiers. He created his own expressive style, often capturing fantastic and spooky scenes. In his work, the influence of European art is noticeable,manifested especially in the use of perspective. The attached graphic shows "Ichi" is a portrait of a woman dressed in traditional Japanese attire standing by a book for teaching ethics.
