The painting was created by Jean-Leon Gerome (1824-1904), a French painter and sculptor. A large portion of his works feature heroic, exotic, and historical stylizations, including Egyptian themes.
Napoleon's expedition to Egypt (Egyptian Expedition) began on May 19, 1798, when Bonaparte's fleet sailed from Toulon, and lasted until October 1801, when the last French troops left Egypt. Its primary goal was to cut off England from its colonies in Africa and Asia. Napoleon also took 167 scientists to Africa to study the country (then part of the Ottoman Empire) and its history.
On July 2, 1798, Napoleon captured Alexandria, won the Battle of the Pyramids on July 21, then entered Cairo and took over the entire country. However, the victorious English fleet in the naval battle of Abukir dashed hopes of permanently conquering Egypt and cutting off the United Kingdom from India.
