The first motorcycle intended for sale left a small factory in Milwaukee in 1903. Its engine had a capacity of 400cc, produced 3 horsepower, and reached a speed of 40 km/h. Just 10 years later, the factory had grown to enormous proportions and became the largest motorcycle factory in the world! Harley Davidson was present in 67 countries, and during World War I, motorcycles began being used by the military. Today, Harley Davidson has an established market position and a loyal fan base worldwide, including Arnold Schwarzenegger and actor George Clooney.
The patent concerns improvements applied to engines by William Harley. The patent describes the main purpose of the improved engine as ensuring its regular operation regardless of the operating temperature. In addition, it was intended to ensure uniform expansion of the interacting components of the engine mechanism, as well as to optimize its weight.
Patent No. US1472068 A was published in 1923 by the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
