Description

A poster featuring the "Immortal Game" between Adolf Anderssen and Lionel Kieseritzki. This game is one of the most famous in chess history!

Played in 1851 as an informal duel between two European mathematics professors, this game became a hallmark of classical 19th-century chess, when astonishing attacks and sacrifices were commonplace. Adolf Anderssen was one of the strongest players of his time and was considered by many to be world champion after winning the 1851 London tournament. Lionel Kieseritzki lived in France for most of his life. There, he gave lessons and played games for five francs an hour at the famous French Café de la Régence. Kieseritzki was well known for being able to defeat a lower-ranked opponent despite giving him a handicap—for example, by playing without a queen.

The game, played between two brilliant players at London's Simpson-in-the-Strand Divan, known as the "Immortal Game," actually took place during a tournament break. Kieseritzki was deeply impressed when it was over and telegraphed the game to his chess club in Paris. The French chess magazine La Regence published it in July 1851.

In this beautiful game, White sacrificed a queen, two rooks, a bishop, and a pawn to achieve a beautiful checkmate with minor pieces after 23 moves.
