Gillette was the son of a patent clerk and often heard stories about new inventions that were changing the world. He dreamed of constructing a simple object that would be inexpensive to produce. In the late 19th century, Gillette approached engineers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to help him develop disposable razor blade technology. However, he was informed that mass production of thin, hard, and inexpensive blades was impossible. Gillette didn't give up and, together with engineer William Nickerson, founded the American Safety Razor Company, where he built his own razor blade manufacturing machine.
The main goal of the patent was to provide a razor that eliminated the need for sharpening the blade. For this purpose, the razor blade is made of very thin sheet steel, which is inherently flexible due to its thinness, but when connected to the handle, it acquires a degree of stiffness sufficient to be completely functional. Another object of the invention is to provide a handle adapted to receive a blade with two cutting edges so that the blade's life can be doubled, and also to provide a simple system for adjusting the cutting edge to accommodate "light or heavy beard growth." The razor handle is also simple in design and easy to clean.
Patent No. US775134A was published in 1904 by the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
