The painting was created by Gustav Klimt (1862-1916), an Austrian painter and printmaker. The artist is considered the most prominent representative of Art Nouveau and the most influential founder of Viennese Modernism. Klimt's work departs significantly from the academic canons instilled in him during his years of study. Along with other Viennese artists, he founded the Association of Austrian Artists in 1897, with which he remained associated until 1905. Gustav Klimt's intention was to create works free from all styles and conventions imposed by contemporary artists. One of the artist's most recognizable works is the portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I.
The attached graphic depicts "The Kiss," a painting from 1907. Gustav Klimt's oil painting, part of the Vienna Secession movement, was created between 1907 and 1908, a period often described as Klimt's "golden period." In 1908, it was acquired by the Österreichische Galerie Belvedere in Vienna and remains in its collection to this day. The work has been reproduced in numerous forms.
The upper part shows a woman's face swooning with delight, her bare arm peeking out from a multicolored, tight-fitting dress, and a small hand resting on a man's neck. A woman kneeling on a floral background is embraced by a portly brunette. Only the profile of his face is visible. He holds his partner's head with his hands to plant a kiss on her cheek.
