The SIG-Sauer P226 appeared in 1981 in conjunction with SIG Sauer's entry into a competition for a new United States Army service pistol. It is an evolved version of the earlier SIG-Sauer P220 pistol, differing from its predecessor primarily in an enlarged 15-round magazine and an additional internal firing pin block (to prevent accidental discharge). The pistol operates on a short recoil principle. The model also features a magazine release that can be moved to the right side of the frame, making the pistol easy to operate by both right- and left-handed shooters.
The SIG-Sauer P226 has gained excellent reviews worldwide. It is used by many police forces around the world. Despite losing the US Army service pistol competition (mainly due to price), the pistol was accepted by the United States Navy SEALs.
Patent No. US4996787A was issued in 1991 by the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
