The first hair dryers were manufactured at the AEG factory in Nuremberg in 1899. They were developed by Polish-born engineer Michał Doliwo-Dobrowolski, director of the AEG electrical equipment factory in Berlin. These first hair dryers were called Fön (from the word "fen," meaning warm mountain wind).
The purpose of the invention is to provide a hair dryer that is simple in design and efficient in operation. It contains an electric motor that forces air around an electric heater, thus ensuring the appropriate temperature for drying hair.
Patent No. US1821525 A was published in 1931 by the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
