Description

This original illustration from the "Plants" series was commissioned by the Universal Dictionary of Natural History by the French botanist and geologist Charles Henry Dessalines d'Orbigny, who lived from 1806 to 1876. The accompanying image depicts the canna (Canna speciosa). It is a genus of plants from the monotypic family Cannaceae.

They are widely cultivated worldwide as ornamentals, usually as hybrid cultivars. Perennials vary in height from several dozen cm to typically 3 m, rarely even 5 m. They do not have a typical stem; this is fulfilled by leaves rolled into a roll at the base. Flowering stems arise from the center of this false stem. Below the ground, they have tuberous rhizomes of varying size and shape. The flowers are clustered in a terminal inflorescence that exceeds the leaves. The flowers are asymmetrical. The three leaflets of the outer whorl are persistent and green to red. Of the three leaflets of the inner whorl, one is smaller, and all are fused at the base to form a tube. The single stamen is lobately flattened and has a single anther located on the margin. The remaining five stamens are either reduced entirely or develop as petaloid staminodes, one of which is usually conspicuous. The ovary is inferior, three-chambered, and topped with a petal-shaped style with a papillary stigma. The flowers secrete nectar that attracts insects.
