Description
A poster with a reproduction of the Monopoly game patent. Monopoly was created in the image of the Landlord's Game by Elizabeth Magie of Illinois. The game was primarily intended to demonstrate the potential consequences of monopoly in the real estate market, rather than to provide entertainment (which is why it was unsuccessful). Therefore, Charles Darrow decided to improve it, making minor changes suggested by existing players, and publish it under his own name, Monopoly. Despite Elizabeth's request, the game became a symbol of America and the free market. Charles Darrow's patent concerns a board game that involves accumulating capital by trading real estate and collecting rent from other players. Players move around the board to purchase properties, streets, and other objects. The game also features a bank, which acts as a lender, a taxpayer, and a payer for players who pass the "Go" space. Players attempt to bankrupt their rivals through financial maneuvers. If successful, they seize the bankrupt rival's properties. The bankrupt player is eliminated from the game, and the last player remaining on the board becomes the monopolist and thus wins the game. Patent No. US2026082 A was issued in 1935 by the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
