A poster with a reproduction of a bicycle patent from 1899.
In 1885, John Starley developed the prototype of the modern bicycle, which was equipped with equal-sized wheels and a handlebar connected directly to the fork, with the rear wheel driven by a chain drive. Starley's vehicle was significantly safer and easier to operate than its predecessors from the beginning of the century. Since then, the basic idea of the bicycle has remained unchanged, although many designers have continued to try new, innovative solutions.
John J. Hentz's patent concerns the application of improvements to bicycle design. He proposed the introduction of two completely separate chains and sprockets, which were to be connected to a shaft mounted on the bicycle frame. This shaft was intended to connect to one or the other sprocket, increasing or decreasing the speed of the bicycle as needed. However, this improvement did not gain widespread acceptance and, like most patents concerning changes to bicycle design from the late 1990s, was not implemented.
Patent No. US624651 A was published in 1899 by the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
Before bicycles took on their modern form, many inventors sought to refine their designs to ensure maximum riding comfort and safety. One of the people involved in creating the prototypes of the bicycles we know today was John K. Starley. He patented the first Rover, which in English means "wanderer" or "vagrant." The two wheels of the two-wheeler were equal in size and were driven by a chain. Bicycles are still known in this form today. The Polish term "bicykle" (bicycle) derives from this model.
The bicycle poster available in our store refers to John J. Hentz's 1899 patent. The inventor proposed the introduction of two sprockets and chains connected by a shaft. The shaft was used to regulate the speed of the bicycle being ridden: it connected to one or the other sprocket. This surprising solution, from our current perspective, did not gain widespread acceptance and was therefore never implemented into mass production.
The bicycle poster is a direct reproduction of patent no. US624651, published by the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
The bicycle poster is a unique gift idea for any cycling enthusiast.
