The painting was created by George Wesley Bellows (1882-1925), an American painter. He represented so-called urban realism with a distinctly anti-academic and anti-elitist approach. He painted portraits, landscapes, and particularly popular scenes of brutal boxing matches. His works did not comment on the people and events depicted, but rather precisely depicted them, simultaneously conveying the atmosphere of places and the emotions of people. Critics considered him an apostle of ugliness, condemning his literalism and departure from traditional canons of painting.
The accompanying print depicts "Stag at Sharkey's," painted in 1909. This is an oil painting by George Wesley Bellows from 1909 depicting two boxers fighting at a private sports club located across from his studio. It is part of the Ashcan School movement, known particularly for depicting scenes of everyday life in early 20th-century New York City, often in the city's poorer neighborhoods. Participants in the boxing ring were usually members of the club, but sometimes outsiders with temporary memberships would fight. These boxers were known as "stags."
