Wigry National Park
is one of 23 national parks in Poland. Established in 1989 and covering an area of over 150 km², it is located in the Suwałki-Augustów Lake District, in the northwestern part of the Augustów Forest.The park's most valuable natural elements are its aquatic ecosystems, including the largest, Lake Wigry, and the longest river and one of the most popular kayaking routes, the Czarna Hańcza. The extensive forest areas, dominated by pines and spruces, represent the forest type characteristic of the Augustów Primeval Forest.
Beavers are under special protection within the Park. Wigry National Park is the rodent's lair. When beavers were almost completely extinct in Poland after World War II, one of the first beaver families was discovered within the Park's current borders, at the mouth of the Czarna Hańcza River into Lake Wigry. Today, the beaver is a permanent feature of the Suwałki region landscape. It is also a symbol of Wigry National Park and our poster.
