The painting was created by Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519), an Italian artist and scholar: painter, sculptor, architect, and engineer.
Leonardo has often been described as the archetypal "Renaissance man." He is widely considered one of the greatest painters of all time and the most multi-talented person in history. It was his talent as a painter that brought Leonardo his greatest popularity. Two of his works, the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper, rank high on lists of the most famous, most imitated, and most frequently mentioned portraits and paintings. Leonardo's sketch of the Vitruvian Man is equally significant in art history. In Poland, the painting Lady with an Ermine is particularly well-known and is in the collection of the Czartoryski Museum in Krakow.
The attached graphic depicts "Lady with an Ermine," commonly known as the Lady with an Ermine. At the time the Czartoryskis acquired the painting, neither the history of the work nor the identity of the sitter were known. The animal's presence was considered a natural, decorative element of the painting. Only a critical analysis of the iconography in the 20th century provided the most likely interpretation of the work.
The animal held by the sitter, called an ermine, and previously an weasel or ferret, has a complex emblematic meaning. Its Greek name, galé ("feline"), is included in the surname Gallerani—a reference to the sitter's surname. The animal is also a clear symbol of Ludovico Sforza, nicknamed "Ermellino" by his contemporaries, meaning "Ermine," in reference to the prestigious Order of the Ermine, of which he was a knight and whose image he used as his coat of arms.
