The painting was created by Johannes Vermeer (1890-1918), a Dutch painter.
He painted primarily genre scenes, masterfully utilizing the play of light. The painter's work is dominated by depictions of women in domestic interiors, engaged in music, reading a letter, or conversation, among other things. Scholars search for hidden allegories or symbolic messages in many of his paintings.
Partially forgotten for almost two centuries after his death, Vermeer was rediscovered in the second half of the 19th century. Today, just over 30 paintings are attributed to him, and this most likely represents almost his entire artistic output.
The attached print depicts "The Milkmaid," a painting dating from around 1658–1661.
The painting depicts a maid standing in a room near a window. The girl in the center of the canvas is focused on her task: pouring milk from a jug into a pot on a table. The maid is wearing a yellow and blue dress and a white shawl. Her gaze is cast downward.
