Palm Tree, Nassau - Poster

The painting was created by Winslow Homer (1836-1910), an American painter, printmaker, and illustrator. One of the most prominent artists working in the United States in the second half of the 19th century. A member of the National Academy of Design since 1865.

The accompanying print depicts "Palm Tree, Nassau," painted in 1898. This watercolor, vertically composed to emphasize the immense height of the central palm, visualizes the approach of rounded storm clouds. The wind swirls around the tree, whose branches bend to the right. Conversely, a red flag in the background—raised by a lighthouse keeper to signal an approaching hurricane or puddle—flaps in the opposite direction. By depicting these opposing winds, Homer contemplates the kinds of complex meteorological effects he would later illustrate in his painting "The Gulf Stream."
