Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer II - poster

The painting was created by Gustav Klimt (1862-1916), an Austrian painter and printmaker. The artist is considered the most prominent representative of Art Nouveau and the most influential founder of Viennese Modernism. Klimt's work departs significantly from the academic canons instilled in him during his years of study. Along with other Viennese artists, he founded the Association of Austrian Artists in 1897, with which he remained associated until 1905. Gustav Klimt's intention was to create works free from all styles and conventions imposed by contemporary artists. One of the artist's most recognizable works is the portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I.

The attached graphic depicts "Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer II," a painting from 1912. The work is a portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer. Bloch-Bauer (1881-1925) was a Viennese socialite who was a patron and close friend of Klimt. In 1907, Klimt completed an earlier portrait of Bloch-Bauer. During World War II, both portraits were among the works of art looted by the Nazis from Bloch-Bauer's descendants. After the war, Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer II was exhibited at the Österreichische Galerie Belvedere until 2006, when it was returned to Adele Bloch-Bauer's niece.

In November 2006, Christie's auctioned Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer II for nearly $88 million, the fourth-highest priced work of art at auction at the time. The buyer was Oprah Winfrey.

In the fall of 2014, Adele Bloch-Bauer II was given on special long-term loan to the Museum of Modern Art in New York. In the summer of 2016, Oprah Winfrey sold it to an unidentified Chinese buyer for $150 million. The painting was temporarily loaned to the Neue Galerie New York for the exhibition "Klimt and the Women of Vienna's Golden Age, 1900-1918."
