In 1885, John Starley developed the prototype of the modern bicycle, which was equipped with wheels of equal size and a handlebar connected directly to the fork, while the rear wheel was driven by a chain drive. Starley’s vehicle was significantly safer and easier to operate than its predecessors from the early part of the century. Since then, the basic idea of the bicycle has not changed, although many designers still tried to apply new, innovative solutions. John J. Hentz’s patent concerns the application of improvements in bicycle design.
