A poster with a reproduction of an illustration of the "Vitruvian Man" from 1490 by Leonardo da Vinci.
The Vitruvian Man (Italian: Le proporzioni del corpo umano secondo Vitruvio, "The Proportions of the Human Body According to Vitruvius") is a drawing by Leonardo da Vinci, popularized by him around 1490. The drawing, created in pencil and ink on paper, depicts the figure of a naked man in two superimposed positions, inscribed within a circle and a square. The drawing is accompanied by text written in so-called mirror writing.
Vitruvius characterizes the human figure as being the primary source of proportions in the classical architectural order. In this case, it was noted that the height of an adult human being is approximately equal to the width of their arms spread apart.
According to Vitruvius, a human being's height is 10 modules, where a module is the height of the head measured from the chin to the roots of the hair. An open hand is also one module long. The human head is 1/8-1/6 from the height of the chest up to the point where the hair begins. From the hair to the chin, it is divided into three parts: the forehead in the upper part, the nose in the second part, and the mouth with the chin in the third. The length measured from the wrist to the elbow is the length of a human foot. The foot is 1/7 of a human being, the elbow is 1/4, the chest is 1/4, and the width of the arms spread is equal to the human height.
