Eagle Head, Manchester, Massachusetts - poster

The painting was created by Winslow Homer (1836-1910) - an American painter, printmaker, and illustrator. One of the most prominent artists working in the United States in the second half of the 19th century. A member of the National Academy of Design since 1865.

The accompanying print is of "Eagle Head, Manchester, Massachusetts," painted in 1870. After his experience as an illustrator during the Civil War, Homer turned his attention to lighter scenes of contemporary life, often focusing on fashionable young women. This painting, depicting three bathing women on a Massachusetts beach, was his most daring subject to date. Critics were less concerned with its unsettling mood than with the fact that, as one noted, the figures were "extremely red-legged and clumsy." As with many of Homer's works, this scene is filled with an aura of mystery and melancholy, suggesting deeper meanings beneath the surface.
