Fishing Boats, Key West - Poster

The painting was created by Winslow Homer (1836-1910), an American painter, printmaker, and illustrator. One of the most prominent artists working in the United States in the second half of the 19th century. A member of the National Academy of Design since 1865.

The accompanying print depicts "Fishing Boats, Key West," painted in 1903. Few of Homer's watercolors can match this one for the effects of hot sunlight and steamy atmosphere, achieved through the speed of wet-on-wet ink application, the extensive and skillful use of a reserve of white paper, and the judicious application of wet pigment, especially in the shadows, which reflect light off the water. This painting is also remarkable for the quantity and visibility of pencil marks, not only to delineate some of the boat's rigging but also to bring to life the murmur of sailboats carried by a spectral breeze. Homer, on the other hand, masterfully drew the figures by hand, without losing any of their form or weight; they even seem to speak.
