Description

The painting was created by George Wesley Bellows (1882-1925), an American painter. He represented so-called urban realism with a distinctly anti-academic and anti-elitist approach. He painted portraits, landscapes, and particularly popular scenes of brutal boxing matches. His works did not comment on the people and events depicted; they merely depicted them precisely, simultaneously conveying the atmosphere of places and the emotions of people. Critics considered him an apostle of ugliness, condemning his literalism and departure from traditional canons of painting.

The accompanying print depicts "Love of Winter," painted in 1914. In January 1914, George Bellows wrote to a friend: "There hasn't been any of my favorite snows. I must always paint snow at least once a year." Shortly thereafter, on February 13th, a massive snowstorm hit New York City, inspiring the artist to paint Love of Winter. He used bright reds, yellows, and greens to intensify the winter scene, and broad, diagonal brushstrokes to convey movement, wind, and speed. The energetic group of skaters and gawkers, comprised of people of various ages and social classes, reflects the diverse populations who enjoyed public parks and the recreational opportunities they offered in early 20th-century New York.
