Poster from the "Medicinal Plants" series depicting Plantago lanceolata, also known as ribwort plantain. It has a wide range of uses in medicine. Ribwort plantain leaves are used mainly as an expectorant and a smooth muscle relaxant for the upper respiratory tract in herbal mixtures and syrups. In addition, in inflammations of the mouth and larynx, the medicinal value lies in the mucilages and tannins, which reduce congestion of the mucous membranes and excessive permeability of capillaries. Bacteriostatic properties are shown by the fresh raw material, also in the form of juice (Succus Plantaginis lanceolatae). The active substance in this case is aucubin, which, under the influence of β-glucosidase contained in the raw material, releases the aglycone aucubigenin with bacteriostatic properties.
