Ribwort plantain - poster

A poster from the "Medicinal Plants" series depicting Plantago lanceolata , or ribwort plantain. It has a wide range of uses in medicine.

Ribwort plantain leaves are mainly used as an expectorant and relaxant for the smooth muscles of the upper respiratory tract in herbal mixtures and syrups, and also for inflammation of the oral cavity and larynx – the mucilages and tannins are of medicinal importance here, as they reduce mucous membrane congestion and excessive capillary permeability.

The fresh plant, also in the form of juice (Succus Plantaginis lanceolatae), exhibits bacteriostatic properties. The active ingredient in this case is aucuboside, which, under the influence of β-glucosidase contained in the raw material, releases the aglycone aucubigenin, which has bacteriostatic properties.

In aqueous infusions, this transformation does not occur due to enzyme inactivation, therefore they do not exhibit antibacterial activity. Decoctions also have a slightly astringent and weak diuretic effect. Studies have shown that aqueous extracts of ribwort plantain leaves, taken orally, stimulate the production of interferon and antiviral antibodies, substances that protect the human body against viral invasion.

Juice from fresh ribwort plantain leaves or a decoction from dried leaves accelerates wound healing and epidermal regeneration.
