All Terrain Armored Transporter
The patent by George W. Lucas Jr. and Joseph E. Johnston concerns a 22-meter-tall combat vehicle, the so-called AT-AT or Imperial Walker. AT-AT stands for All-Terrain Armored Transporter. This walking machine served primarily with the forces of the Galactic Empire. The AT-AT is armed with twin medium-range cannons mounted on the sides of its head and two heavy laser cannons mounted on the underside of its head. Its thick armor made it nearly invincible on the battlefield. A passenger cannon was housed inside. Weaknesses include the vehicle's neck and unstable legs. During the Battle of Hoth, a famous scene from the Star Wars trilogy, the Rebel Alliance was attacked by Imperial stormtroopers equipped with AT-ATs, among other vehicles. Luke Skywalker first destroyed one AT-AT with a snowspeeder equipped with harpoon-cables. Later, Luke destroyed another AT-AT with a thermal detonator. Despite the destruction of the Rebel base, many of the Alliance's leading figures, including Mon Mothma, Leia Organa, Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Chewbacca, managed to escape. The AT-AT walker also appears in other Star Wars universe locations.
